Which kind of night care?
The question is how often help is needed after dark. No more than a couple of times? A sleeping night, with the carer in bed in a spare room, ready to be woken, is usually enough. Wandering, turning, toileting, night-time medication or a high falls risk point to a waking night, where the carer stays awake until morning.
Ask each agency for two written prices, sleeping and waking, and what it charges on weekends and bank holidays. Sleeping nights are usually charged at a flat rate; waking nights cost noticeably more because they are based on the hourly rate.
Why families book night care
Families often turn to night care after a hospital stay, when falls at night start to happen, when dementia breaks up sleep, at the end of life, or so that a partner who cares all day can sleep through a few nights a week. Some book a night or two each week; others book every night.
Who pays for overnight care?
Attendance Allowance at the higher rate (£114.60 a week) is not affected by savings and goes to people over State Pension age who need help both during the day and at night. The council can also include night care in a care plan when its assessment shows night-time needs; ask Windsor and Maidenhead council, which must assess for free.
