How Fair Deal works
- You pay a set contribution, the HSE pays the rest. Under the Nursing Homes Support Scheme (Fair Deal) you pay 80% of your assessable income and 7.5% a year of the value of your assets above €36,000 (€72,000 for a couple). The HSE pays the balance of the home's agreed weekly price.
- Your contribution is the same at any approved home, whatever it charges, so the price mainly matters if you are paying privately.
- Your home counts for 3 years only (the 3-year cap), and a nursing home loan lets you defer that part until after death.
- Fair Deal does not cover extra charges such as activities, hairdressing or therapies, or short stays like respite. Ask each home for its list of extra charges.
- Apply to the HSE: a care needs assessment confirms long-term care is needed, and a financial assessment sets your contribution. Funding starts from the date it is approved, not before.

Common questions
How much does a nursing home cost in Ireland?
The typical weekly price agreed for Fair Deal at private and voluntary nursing homes is €1,291, ranging from €1,200 to €1,502. The typical cost of care in HSE public nursing homes is €1,964 a week. Under Fair Deal you pay a contribution based on your income and assets and the HSE pays the rest.
Who regulates nursing homes in Ireland?
HIQA (the Health Information and Quality Authority) registers and inspects every nursing home, called a designated centre for older people. Its inspection reports are published on hiqa.ie.
How do I apply for Fair Deal?
Apply to the HSE through the Nursing Homes Support Scheme. A care needs assessment confirms that long-term nursing home care is needed, and a financial assessment works out your contribution. Funding is paid from the date it is approved.
