Sleeping night or waking night?
On a sleeping night the carer goes to bed in a spare room and can be woken if needed, usually no more than once or twice a night. On a waking night the carer stays awake throughout, which suits people who wander, need turning, toileting or medication during the night, or who are at high risk of falls.
Most agencies charge a flat rate for a sleeping night and price a waking night closer to their hourly rate, so a waking night costs noticeably more. Ask for both prices in writing, including weekend and bank holiday rates.
Help paying for it
Night care can be part of a council care plan if the assessment finds night-time needs. Derbyshire council must offer the assessment free. Attendance Allowance is paid at the higher rate of £114.60 a week to people over State Pension age who need help both day and night, whatever their savings. Requesting an assessment from Derbyshire council.
