Sleeping night or waking night?
On a sleeping night the carer goes to bed in a spare room and can be woken if needed, usually no more than once or twice a night. On a waking night the carer stays awake throughout, which suits people who wander, need turning, toileting or medication during the night, or who are at high risk of falls.
A sleeping night is normally a fixed fee. Waking nights are priced nearer the hourly rate and cost noticeably more. Get both figures in writing, with rates for weekends and bank holidays.
Common reasons for overnight care
- Returning home after a hospital stay
- Repeated falls during the night
- Dementia that disrupts sleep
- Care at the end of life
- A daytime carer, often a partner, needing unbroken sleep
Bookings range from one or two nights a week to every night.
Help paying for it
Night care can be part of a council care plan if the assessment finds night-time needs. Kent council must offer the assessment free. Attendance Allowance is paid at the higher rate of £114.60 a week to people over State Pension age who need help both day and night, whatever their savings.
